Samos' longstanding connection to the sea. and the soil was and still is pivotal in global trade throughout history. Characteristically, in 1907, 4,618 ships with a total capacity of over 400,000 tons passed through the ports of Samos, underlining the vital importance of maritime trade to the island’s economy. The island’s exports are wine, tobacco, cigarettes, leather, and olive oil among the main exports, primarily to Northern France, Germany, and Malta. Samos’ famed sweet wine, used in vermouth production, was particularly sought after, with an impressive 12,000 tons produced in 1907. Today, production stands at approximately 7,000 tons annually.

Tunnel of Eupalinus

The Tunnel of Eupalinus, once regarded as one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. The engineering brilliance of the Tunnel lies in its innovative approach to water transport to the city of Samos.Water flowed through ceramic pipes embedded within the tunnel to transporting water. Built with two teams working from opposite ends, the tunnel was carefully aligned to meet at the center, a remarkable feat of precision without modern technology, measuring 1.8 meters wide, 1.8 meters high, and stretching 1,350 meters in length. The use of such advanced techniques in its construction allowed it to remain functional for nearly a millennium.

Cleopatra and Marc Antony Baths

The Roman Baths of Thermes, a complex built in the 2nd century AD was a hub of public life, and part of the athletic complex of ancient Samos, featuring cold and hot pools, a sauna, and rooms with intricate under-floor heating systems. The complex also included vestiaries for visitors, and its walls were adorned with marble, while the floors boasted beautiful mosaics depicting various scenes.
